I love quotes

(Originally published by Nattie on August 26, 2003)
I collect quotes the same way some people collect birdhouses or trinkets. I love them. I am awed by the people who can package what they want to say between those quotation marks.
Here are some of my favorite quotes:
~ “Phillipians 4:13 for pete’s sake.”–said by Father Tim in At Home In Mitford by Jan Karon

~ “Daddy always says, ‘An ounce of pretension is worth a pound of manure.'”–said by Shelby (Julia Roberts) in “Steel Magnolias”
As you can see, I like silly quotes, profound quotes, awe-inspiring quotes…read on for more.
~ “Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.”–Louisa May Alcott
~ “Many people hear voices when no one is there. Some of them are called mad and are shut up in rooms to stare at the walls all day. Others are called writers and they do pretty much the same thing.”–Margaret Chittenden, writer
~ “The art of writing is the art of applying the seat of the pants to the seat of the chair.”–Mary Heaton Vorse
~ “Make it a point to do something every day that you don’t want to do. This is the golden rule for acquiring the habit of doing your duty without pain.”–Mark Twain
~ “Avoid commenting on a host’s poor housekeeping, even if you notice that there seem to be toadstools growing out of the floor.”–A.A. Milne
~ “We turn to God for help when our foundations are shaking only to learn that it is God shaking them.”–Charles West
~ “Worry is like a rocking chair; it will give you something to do but won’t get you anywhere.”–unknown
~ “You should work on projects that make your heart sing.”–Lady Bird Johnson
~ “Being a mother, as far as I can tell, is a constantly evolving process of adapting to the needs of your child while also changing and growing as a person in your own right.”–Deborah Insel
~ “When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself.”–Wayne Dyer
~ “Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; Prayer is the greater work.”–Oswald Chambers
~ “But words are things,
and a small drop of ink,
  falling like dew upon thought,
  produces that which makes
  thousands, perhaps millions, think.”–Lord Byron

  1. Nattie's Daddy Says:

“Why is it that we rejoice at a birth and grieve at a funeral? It is because we are not the person involved.”–Mark Twain

  2. Joy Says:

“Don’t blame others for your failure to be fully accountable for your own life. If others are to blame, then you have given them control.” — Bob Perks
“To go against the dominant thinking of your friends, of most of the people you see every day, is perhaps the most difficult act of heroism you can perform.” — Theodore White

*sniffle* A couple of these quotes were ones I sent to Nat.
“…what you believe depends on what you’ve seen – not only what is visible, but what you are prepared to look in the face…” –The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie (pg. 252)
“When I marched in Se lma, my feet were praying.” – Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel (about marching with Martin Luther King Jr in 1963)
“Nobody can judge an internal injury,” he had said, “by the size of the superficial wound, of the hole.” – The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie (pg 404)

thank you-this post was deliciously Natalie and brought me great joy today

  5. cousin mark Says:

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” — Jim Elliott

  6. Cynthia Says:

“There is no pit so deep – that He isnt deeper still.” Betsie ten Boom (said to her sister Corrie ten Boom while dying in a Nazi concentration camp)
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?’ Actually, who are you NOT to be? You are CHILD OF GOD. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in all of us. and when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” — Nelson Mandela

I’m catching up with my reading…but I think this collecting of quotes was one of the things that caught my eye about Nattie.
