  4. I have been married for over five years to my hubby.
  5. We got married in Las Vegas.
  6. I have a five yo son named Jonathan.
  7. I have a three yo daughter named Anna.
  8. I used to wear contacts daily but I'm getting less vain as I get older.
  9. I just got a new pair of purty glasses. They are translucent pink on one side and powder blue on the other so when you see them they look lavender or purple.
  10. I am a SAHM.
  11. I also work at home writing, but don't really consider it a job--yet.
  12. I love libraries.
  13. My goal is to learn my library inside out and know as much as the librarians.
  14. I am taking my kids to storytime at the library for the first time tomorrow.
  15. I love the smell of books.
  16. I need to lose weight--badly!
  17. I've steadily gained weight since being married and having babies so I almost weigh as much as I did when I gave birth. Yuck!
  18. So for exercise I like to walk; do pilates, yoga or Tae Bo.
  19. I love chocolate.
  20. I am addicted to caffeine.
  21. My favorite forms of caffeine include--Diet Coke, jumping monkey frappaccinos, Snickers mocha, french vanilla cappuccino, or herbal tea.
  22. I love to read--a lot
  23. Some of my favorite authors are Jan Karon, Janette Oke, L.M. Montgomery to name a few.
  24. I was diagnosed with chronic depression earlier this year.
  25. I also love scrapbooking and photography.

On an up note, I got my new glasses. They are purty. They are a translucent blue on one side and pink on the other, so when you look at them you see...putple! They are a cat's eye shape. I like them.

I'm also starting to think Jonathan has more than a speech and language delay going on. *sigh* I've always known he was a special guy, but he has been a major handful lately. I don't know what to do for him. I'm not fond of people who medicate their children because they don't want to parent. *sigh* So, I am praying.

So, that is my life in a nutshell--I'm tired, I got new glasses, my son is a pain. :o)

I've been singing the praises of fall and the cooler weather. Then I had to go through my children's winter clothes and shoes. Apparently they have both had a growth spurt.

Shoes bought three months ago no longer fit. All my son's pants look like waders. My daughter is outfited for spring, but not doing so well in the fall/winter department. I have a drawer full of children's socks and maybe only a half dozen fit either of them.

The day ended on a better note.

I didn't get anyone to watch the kids, but I did wake hubby up and ask him to take Jonathan to speech therapy. While they were gone, Anna and I laid down and took a nap. That helped some. I still have a headache, but it hasn't gone into a full-blown migraine yet.

I went to a neat workshop at the library tonight. It is called "Ready to Learn" and is sponsored by PBS. It is about being discerning about what your children watch, and using the shows they do watch as a springboard for more learning.

Tonight's workshop was on "Reading Rainbow" which I have said before is one of the kids' favorite shows, and I totally approve of it. They gave away some free stuff--a Teletubbies magnet, a Teletubbies nursery rhyme CD, a packet with all kinds of info, a Between the Lions coloring book, a book called Is Your Mama A Llama and If You Give A Mouse A Cookie. They had child care for the kids. Jonathan got to play on the computer. He's had it taken away from him at home until he can control his bowel movements better. He said tonight after a little talk that he is going to try harder.

Then, of course, the new episode of "Friends" was tonight, and it was great!

So now I am signing off and going to tuck myself in with a really good book called The Church Ladies by Lisa Samson.

I am thankful that my baby grew up to be a better writer than I. If not for Natalie's ability to reach out and connect with the world as she did, I would never have "met" so many of you who have helped me bear up under the grief of her passing.

As difficult as that has been to understand, it is no easier to express my gratitude to and for each of you.

Have a Blessed Thanksgiving Day! And hug your children...early and often!

Fall is here!

At 5:45 a.m. on a cool Indiana morning, fall arrived!

Woohoo! The weather has already been fallish. Even on days when the temperatures got into the 80's there was no humidity so it has been very comfortable. I have windows opened wide and am actually cold today. I'm pretty sure I'll have to close the windows tonight.

We are on day two of the tv blackout and doing well. Jonathan decided to put on his own show starring a stuffed dog and a robot. This is what I was hoping for.

TV blackout

The "Saturday Soapbox" inspired me to get off my duff. As soon as hubby started getting ready for work, I turned the tv off. Woohoo! Woohoo!

At first the kids pitched a fit, but they adjusted. I turned it on after an hour and a half so they could watch "Reading Rainbow" on PBS. Then it went off again. I also let them watch "Zoom" for half an hour then turned if off again.

After bath times I let them pick out a video and we are watching "Toy Story." For a house that usually has the TV on 24/7, we managed to turn the tv off for five hours!!!! Yeah!

Next I'm going to print out the shows on PBS and let the kids pick out four that they want to watch and that will be it. Of course, when hubby is home that will go out the window. I just can't get him to see that watching too much tv rots their brains. *wink*

I'm not saying all tv is bad just that there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Why is there so much obesity in the US? Why are kids always bored?

I want them to know how to amuse themselves like they did this rainy day. I printed coloring sheets off for them. Jonathan built a house. He played with his car ramp. They read! Food for thought.

I got to sleep in this morning...till 6:30. It is a sad sad day when I consider 6:30 sleeping in.

I went and visited with my dad today. He took the kids and me out to eat at Wendy's. Then we visited a newly remodeled Christian bookstore. I added some books to my to-buy list:

~ A Love So Big: Anchoring Your Child to the Heart of God by Sheila Walsh

So many books, so little time...

Daddy also loaned me a book called Cross Creek by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. She is a Floridian who wrote The Yearling. Here is a short review that I found at Amazon: "Originally published in 1942, the warm, spirited memoirs of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Yearling traces her life in Cross Creek, Florida, where she managed a vast orange grove and a succession of unruly farmhands."

I returned some books to my aunt and she gave me her old copies of Creating Keepsakes. I let my subscription go on it ages ago and have missed it terribly.

Then I went grocery shopping. Fun! Not with two preschoolers.

I spent the rest of the afternoon swatting bees. They must think I am sweet or something. It was a beautiful fallish day--bright, sunny and not humid at all. I love having my windows open. The kids played outside for a bit.

Then I made egg salad for dinner. It was pretty good for my first try.

I spent the rest of the day reading Miss Julia Hits the Road by Ann B. Ross. It is a hoot. I think it is the best yet. I plan on reading again as soon as the kids are in bed.

Then there is church tomorrow. They are having a fall festival. I don't know if I'll be going. I can swat bees at home and the kids are usually unruly. They almost got kicked out of the library yesterday. So embarrassing. Okay, the kids are being too quiet. I must go.

Guarding Hearts and Minds

As Christians we are careful about what we allow to go into our children's hearts and minds. How do you reflect your Christian beliefs in what you choose to watch and let your children watch on the television?

What about you? What do you watch? What are your favorite shows during the week? Do you ever feel guilty for watching something or do you feel fine about all that you watch each week? ;-)

Do you think you could find other ways to spend your time away from the television? If you turned off the television what would you do instead? Maybe you already turn it off - what kinds of things have you found more time for since you turned it off?

How much is too much?

This is not an easy question for me to answer. In the past few months I have started seeing TV as a non essential. It has given me more free time. If there is one show I like at 8:00, I don't have to watch the whole line up. It is becoming easier to turn the TV off. But I am sure I still watch too much TV. A friend of mine mentioned that Billy Graham's one regret was that he watched too much TV. How much TV could a man of God like him watch? Food for thought.

How much television do you let your kids watch?

Again, too much! My husband isn't very discriminatoroy about how much TV the children watch. When I punish the kids for something by taking the TV away, my husband will tell me I am punishing him. So when he is gone to work, I turn the TV off more. It is still on too much.

Are there any shows that you deem appropriate for your children?

We generally watch PBS. We don't have cable, so that is the only channel with cartoons on in the daytime. I don't know how much longer we'll be watching it. "Sesame Street" has decided to go even farther in educating our children. They have introduced a gay family to some segments. I want to be the one who tells my children about these things--not "Sesame Street."

What about cable, satellite or local programming only? What do you prefer?

We don't have cable so we just get the local stations. I like PBS, but like I stated above they aren't perfect. I do miss the Disney Channel, Nick Jr, Nick at night, TV Land and AMC. Disney and Nick Jr had some good programs for the kids like "Rolie Polie Olie," "Stanley," "Blues Clues" and "Little Bill." We can still see some of those programs by getting their videos at the library. I like Nick-at-night and TVLand for the classic reruns--like "I Love Lucy" and "Andy Griffith" and AMC always had good older movies on which is what I prefer.

Do you have any shows you watch as a family, maybe sporting events?

We don't really have any shows we watch as a family. Occassionally we have a family movie night and we usually pick a movie like "The Tigger Movie" or "Lilo and Stich" to watch together. The kids really aren't into sports yet. They are only three and five. They will occassionally watch NASCAR with my husband.

How do you reflect your Christian beliefs in what you choose to watch and let your children watch on the television?

I have gotten lax in this department. I used to be really selective about what the children watched. I've gotten lax with my own viewing too. As Christians, I believe we should be selective--garbage in, garbage out. I am becoming less and less comfortable watching shows like "Will and Grace," etc. In fact I've decided the only show I will watch on "Must See TV" Thursdays is "Friends."

What about you? What do you watch? What are your favorite shows during the week? Do you ever feel guilty for watching something or do you feel fine about all that you watch each week? ;-)

Here are the shows I try to catch every week (although during the summer I will miss them if they are reruns):
Mondays--"Everybody Loves Raymond"
Tuesdays--"All of Us"
Thursdays--"Friends"
Fridays--"Reba"
Saturdays--"The District"

I also like to watch some reruns, but don't die if I can't watch them. ;o) Here are the reruns I watch:

"Everybody Love Raymond"
"Friends"
"I Love Lucy"
"Andy Griffith"
"Dharma and Greg"
"Are You Being Served"
"Cosby Show"

Again, I don't watch them consistently, but these are available on local stations. I also like "American Idol," but that is a seasonal show.

Occasionally I catch "Oprah" or "Dr. Phil," but I'm okay with missing them unless they are on a subject I'm looking forward too. I also like to watch "Life Today" on our Christian station and will tune it to Joyce Meyer as I can. I will also watch the "700 Club" when I can. I am fairly comfortable with my tv viewing.

I recently got hooked on very non-Christian show called "The OC." It is on hiatus till October. I'm going to have to fight myself to not watch it. They left a killer cliff hanger last week. Oh, the humanity!

I also should probably give up "Friends," but I "grew up" with them. They have been on since I was 20 or so and they are like my own friends.

Do you think you could find other ways to spend your time away from the television? If you turned off the television what would you do instead? Maybe you already turn it off--what kinds of things have you found more time for since you turned it off?

I tend to read more (if that is humanly possible--I already read a lot). I find more time for exercise. I get outside more when I'm not tied to the "tube." I will also write more, scrapbook and even cross-stitch.

I would really like to start limiting the children's and my TV viewing. It is going to be challenging, but if I'm vigilant it can be done. It will be harder during the winter, especially if it is a bad one. But for now, my goal is to turn the TV off as soon as my hubby goes to work. Then I will only watch TV when my scheduled shows are on and I will stop watching the reruns unless I have nothing else to do and there is always something to do as a mother of two, wife, writer and growing Christian.

I think I'll call it BAA.
I got another book club order today Quality Paperback Club.

I couldn't pass up the hardback copies of the first four Harry Potter books for only $2.

I also got--an Anne Tyler book--Back When We Were Grownups
The Writer's Idea Book by Jack Heffron
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and Tears of the Giraffe by Alexander McCall Smith.

Then the other day I bid on some books on ebay. I didn't think I would get them. They were priced ridiculously low.
So yesterday I got--Emily of New Moon, Emily Climbs, and Emily's Quest by L.M. Montgomery. Did I mention I got all three books for only 2.79!

Then last night I stopped by the church library after prayer meeting. Yep, I came home with more books. Even though we were walking, I picked up A Common Life and In This Mountain by Jan Karon and Let Me Be A Woman by Elisabeth Elliot.

I'm drowning in books.
What a way to go?!

Welcome to the world...

Allisyn Rose Carter arrived today 09/17/03 at 13:59 with dad Tim helping mid-wife Eileen with the delivery as mom Deanna pushed, and Grandmas Patti, Margaret, and Mary took pictures, and made sure the weight and height were correct. Place of arrival was L&D room 4 at Lakeview Kaiser in Anaheim, the same room that her sisters, Eryn and Kaitlyn arrived in. Weight 7#, 8oz and height 20 1/2 inches long.

Grandpas John and Bill were in the waiting room, betting on who would come to tell them that Allisyn had arrived. Both lost the bet, but Mom and baby are doing fine.

Something new...

Wes came home last night with a Candy Land game for the kids.

I haven't played Candy Land in years. Not since I used to babysit when I was in high school. I forgot how fun it was to sit there and play a board game. Anna was a nut. She just turned three, ya know. She would draw a card and then ponder it saying, "Hmmm." And every move she took she would raise her hands in the air and say, "I win." Too cute!

Then she would pout every time someone got one of the Princess Lollipop and Queen cards. Apparently she is the only one allowed to get the girly cards.

The cards seemed to be stacked in my favor. I won the first game and then had to cheat to not win the next two. Poor Jonathan wanted to win so badly that I let him win the next game. Then the third game I kept letting Jonathan take extra turns (Anna had already quit playing) and I still ended up on the last square before winning! That was the kamikazi round, too.

Jonathan and I would knock each other off our squares as we passed. I started it, believe it or not. It got a good belly laugh out of Jonathan.

We are resting now before we play again. Three rounds of Candy Land can take a lot out of you.

My friend Dana tried to sell her daughter yesterday. Think I could do that with my little guy...?

I'll want him back eventually. Just take him off my hands for an afternoon, or maybe a day or two.

I'd miss him...surely I would.

If he were gone too long his sister would have no one to blame her messes on.

Pity me please.
