For Everything a Season

I. love. Philip. Gulley. When I can manage to read this past week, I've been enjoying his book For Everything a Season - Simple Musings on Living Well. It is a collection of vignettes based on the verses in Ecclesiastes - "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven."
I love his droll sense of humor. Gloria Gaither calls him part Mark Twain, part Garrison Keillor. I agree. Those are two other authors I love with a passion that is holy.
Just to give you a taste of his writing if you've never read him, here is a quote from the chapter "A Time to Hate."
"...ever since then I've been trying to find a way to hate certain people and walk close to Jesus, but without success. If you've found a way to do that, let me know. There are several people I would love tohate if I thought I could get away with it."
His non-fiction essays are simply lovely and his Harmony series is a hoot. Any one who has been a pastor or a pastor's wife should enjoy his witty insight on being a pastor.
I've not read his other non-fiction works (If Grace Is True & If God Is Love) because I don't hold with all his theology. That doesn't mean that his other works aren't fantastic! He lives here in Indiana. I'd love to meet him and pick his brain some time.
Mr. Gulley, can I sit on your stone porch some time and talk about black maple trees?

How do I read so much?

Someone commented on my April Reads post and asked how I could read so much. Well, the reasons are threefold (any one who watched Friends should find that amusing)...

1. I have no life. Well, I do, but right now I don't have a car so I spend less time doing superfluous things in le car. I am much more organized in my errand running since I have to walk there.

2. I always have a book with me. Seriously it is a disease. I cannot not read. I will read cereal boxes if I don't have a book with me so it is just easier to always have a book with me.

3. I suffer from insomnia. I'm a night owl anyway so once my kids are in bed I frolic in the land of book mania. I can get more read in 2 hours after dark than the same 2 hours when the kids are running around.

And that my friends is the secret to my madness...er...success.

Newberry challenge

Because there are so many challenges out there, I thought I'd start one of my own. While I like all the challenges, I wanted to craft one to meet my needs and others could join in if they want. When I was looking at the Pulitzer list and Newberry list recently I realized that I've read more Newberry books. And I like it that way. I am a mother. I like to have my pulse on what the kids are reading AND I love young adult fiction. It reminds me of curling up in my dad's lazy boy and reading the afternoon away. It also makes me wonder if I could write children's books too.
So here is the challenge...
1. Pick 6 books from the Newberry list.
2. Comment here that you are in the challenge and list to your blog.
3. Post your picks on your blog.
4. You have from May 15, 2007 to Dec 31, 2007 to read and review the 6 books you choose.

Anyone up for it?
If you look at my 15decades list you'll note I have a few Newberry winners on there but I think I'll pick some others for this challenge.

Updated 4/18/07
My picks:
1. The Giver by Lois Lowry (1994)
2. Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan (1986)
3. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien (1972)
4. The Door in the Wall by Marguerite de Angeli (1950)
5. Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink (1936)
6. Gay Neck, the Story of a Pigeon (1928)

Bridge to Terabithia

I finished my second book in the TBR challenge. Actually I finished it in one afternoon. It was Bridge to Terebithia by Katherine Paterson. I had a multitude of reasons for including this book in my challenge.
1. I had never read it and I don't know why?!
2. They now have a movie out and I CANNOT see a movie without reading the book.
3. My son wanted to see the movie and I must then read the book and see the movie first because that is the type of parent I am.

So one afternoon late last month I sat down with BTT and could not put it down. I finished by the end of the evening. I was wrapped up in the lives of Jess Aarons and Leslie Burke. Having not read it as a child maybe I see a lot more in it than a child would, but I see a son who wants to be loved my his father (maybe this is more intense right now because I'm also reading The 5 Love Languages of Children) but I also so understood the girl whose imaginations was fed by books. Sound like anyone you know?

Then last night I went to see the movie. They took huge Hollywood liberties, but I think they stayed true to the heart of the story. *sob*

Bring a box of kleenex with you to the reading and the watching.

Here is a link to an interview done with Ms. Paterson on Christianity Today. I also enclosed a favorite part of the interview for me. Note: there are some spoilers so if you have not read the book or seen the movie...do so first! You will not be disappointed.

There's a trend lately to provide books and films for Christian audiences that are "safe for the whole family." Perhaps your books have been challenged because they're not necessarily "safe" for children. What do you make of the idea that children's books should be "safe"?

Paterson: Well, don't give them the Bible, then, because it's certainly not a safe book. Safety and faith are different things. If you want everything to be safe, then you can probably just totally do without the imagination. If you're so afraid of your imagination that you stifle it, how are you going to know God? How can you imagine heaven?

TBR challenge

I finally finished a book in the TBR challenge - Through Gates of Splendor by Elisabeth Eliott. I can remember hearing about the story of the 5 missionaries that went to Ecuador and were killed by the Auca's from a young age. In fact I think I heard the widows on a Focus On the Family anniversary broadcast. I've always admired missionaries and their story is particulary gripping. They knew they could die. They knew they would most likely die, but they went anyway because God told them to go. He said the fields were ripe and they said, "Send me." It is awe inspiring and at the same time makes me feel very very small.
It is not in my TBR stack, but I have the journals of Jim Eliott. I can't wait to read those. But I must tackle my next TBR read - Bridge to Terebithia. My kids want to see the movie and I have meant to read this book for eons...well, you know the drill. Shoulda. Woulda. Coulda. Don't!

The best book I read this summer

Honey For A Child's Heart by Gladys Hunt

There are too many things I loved about this book to list, but I will share two quotes.

"Rule #1 Don't Criticize what you haven't read yourself."

and

"If families don't read books together, how do they know each other's friends?"

I cannot wait to read Honey for a Teen's Heart and Honey for a Woman's Heart.

FYI...I am kinda sorta back online...temporarily.
